Walter T. Phillips photograph collection [graphic] : Fairbanks and environs, 1911-1918.

The images depict Fairbanks and surrounding area; individuals, businesses, the Agricultural Experiment Station, floods, agriculture, schools and school children, 4th of July (1916), parades and other community activities, 1911-1918. The collection also contains an image of the Meridian Hill Farm, the Howie Home, the Rickert's Farm, Masonic Temple and the Catholic Church in Fairbanks. Some views were acquired from the Margaret Kennan Harrais Estates.

Walter Phillips grew up in Valdez, his parents arriving there in 1908. In 1915 they moved to Old Iliamna and returned to Valdez in 1923. He worked for the Signal Corps, the Alaska Road Commission and later as a telephone lineman on the Valdez Trail (now part of the Richardson Highway). In June of 1984, Walter Phillips completed "The Roadhouses of the Richardson Highway, the first quarter century, 1898 to 1923," which he researched under an Alaska Historical Commission grant (Historical Collectio...

Margaret Keenan was born in Batesville, Ohio, in 1872. She came to Alaska in 1914 to assume a post as principal of the Skagway schools, a post she held until 1916. She then accepted the post of superintendent of schools in Fairbanks, which she held until 1918. In 1920, Keenan married Martin Harrais, a miner. In 1924, she joined her husband in McCarthy, Alaska, where she worked as a teacher. After the death of her husband, she became U.S. Commissioner and ex-officio probate judge in Valdez, Alask...
